How does the Eco-System work? Anybody know? My eco-system ranking bounces all over the place. It reached the dizzying heights the other day of 106 links only to drop, for no apparent reason, to 60 links, in one swell foop. How does it work? How does it calculate links and so on?
I'm tempted to pull it off my blog entirely.
Any thoughts?
Posted by Random Penseur at November 29, 2004 11:51 AMI have no idea. Actually, I think it's based on how many blogrolls you're listed on - that are on the blog's front page. But I suspect it's really all a conspiracy. (You have to say that in your head like so: 'KON-SCHPIR-ISH-EE')
Sorry. I channel Oliver Stone until I've had enough caffeine.
Posted by: Margi at November 29, 2004 12:29 PMThat's about the size of it. The Ecosystem measures the relative preponderence of instances of reference for member blogs. In other words, how many links there are to your site from the index page of other Ecosystem blogs.
The reason that rankings jump around (well, the reason after the conspiracy, of course) is that it isn't a fluid system. It goes through a reindexing process, parsing the info from its member blogs one after the other. There are a lot of Ecosystem blogs so it takes a while. It's also CPU intensive so NZBear can't let it run as often as he'd like.
The jumps generally happen when you have a hot post. You get lots of links to that post and they last a week until they fall off of their blog's main page. Then the Ecosystem gets reindexed and all those links that got attrited don't count any more so you fall half way back down the lists.
Posted by: Jim at November 29, 2004 02:36 PMI stopped paying attention to the Ecosystem over a year ago. Been much happier ever since!
If I wanted a rank, I'd still be in uniform.
Ok, thanks for the explanations. That was helpful.
Posted by: RP at November 30, 2004 08:51 AMI hate the ecosystem and am taking myself off of it. All it does is confuse and/or depress.
If you want to know if you're loved, search your blog on technorati. Then you find out if people love you.
Besides me and Jim that is.
