This week has been full of unpleasant moments (but some very pleasant ones, too) but if I had to pick one unpleasant moment above all others, it would be this one:
So, there I am, lying on a weight bench, 8 reps into my third set of chest presses. I am pushing a 75 pound dumbbell in each hand and at this point, I have pushed them for a total of 35 times. Five more reps and I hit 40, at which point I will stop. Or, and now we get to the unpleasant part, I could just stop at 8 when I feel something in my left shoulder painfully pop in the middle of the rep, causing great pain and resulting in my arm collapsing so I kind of bounce the 75 pound weight off of my chest.
The trainer took me through a series of exercises with both arms afterwards and determined that I did not have any muscle problem or any rotator cuff problem. I am not sure what failed but I know that I am a bit sore, still, and quite hugely pissed off.
Yes, a most unpleasant moment, indeed, when I realized that my arm was going to collapse on me.
I trust, for my friends out there, your day is going better than mine.

Hope you feel better soon.
Of course, your injury just adds to the list of reasons I maintain a sloth-like lifestyle. Sure they'll be wheeling me out of the house for an emergency surgery to separate me from the couch in a couple of years, but its worth it if I can avoid injury until then.
Posted by: phineas g. at September 28, 2007 02:55 PMgetting old is hell. Hope you're not still sore.
Posted by: caltechgirl at September 28, 2007 05:34 PMI played racquetball with Lucy the other day one-on-one for the first time since JULY when we went back east and everything seemed to speed up until last Sunday. Had no time for the gym.
You can imagine how horribly out of shape I am. I could only play for half an hour before I had to beg off and my arms are still extremely sore today. Yah.
I sympathize with you, RP. And be careful; don't overdo. Just do two reps for a while or avoid that machine altogether and do other upper body machines for a while.
I had a yoga instructor position my leg one day for a pose years ago when I was in my 30's and I felt something twist and I was out of commission for weeks. Couldn't do anything with that leg, could barely walk on it. Man, I was pissed off.
Posted by: Amber at September 29, 2007 11:48 AMMan, that sucks, I've been there RP.
One spring I decided to right a wheelbarrow full of dirt in my backyard that had tipped onto its side over the winter. I apparently yanked it too hard and fractured a rib. It still bugs me when I do strenuous things (especially when it has to do with dirt strangely) and that's got to be about 5 years ago.
Posted by: Oorgo at October 1, 2007 03:24 PMHope you feel better, RP! I've always suspected that physical exercise is dangerous, and this terrifying tale will just strengthen my conviction!
